Eco Protin: Sustainable Agribusiness Solutions

Kwabena Tufuor, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and marketing professional, is redefining agribusiness sustainability through his company, Eco Protin.

As the co-founder and CEO, Tufuor is pioneering sustainable agribusiness solutions by using organic waste streams to produce high-quality, insect-based feed for livestock and aquaculture. To help improve the business, he enrolled in the Master of Business Creation (MBC) Global program at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. The program has played a crucial role in refining his business strategy and scaling his impact.

“The MBC program has been transformative,” Tufuor said. “It has given us strategic guidance, helping us refine our business model, mitigate risks, and sharpen our competitive positioning.”

Through expert mentorship and hands-on support, Tufuor has optimized the business’s cost structure and expanded its revenue opportunities, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Eco Protin focuses on using black soldier fly-based feeds to create a cost-effective, high-protein alternative to traditional fishmeal and soy-based feeds. By harnessing insect technology, network technologies, and sustainable waste management, the company helps farmers reduce feed costs by up to 30% while contributing to environmental conservation.

“Our goal is not just to supply feed but to build a sustainable ecosystem,” Tufuor said. “By valorizing organic waste, we’re reducing landfill waste, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting a circular economy.”

Beyond feed production, Eco Protin also produces ENTOFERT, an organic fertilizer derived from its operations, which enhances soil health and reduces dependency on chemical fertilizers. Additionally, the company’s WASTE4CASH initiative empowers women-led farms by providing them an extra revenue stream through waste collection.

Since its founding, Eco Protin has gained recognition for its innovative approach. Tufuor’s achievements include winning the 2019 Kosmos Innovation Centre AgriTech Challenge and excelling in competitions like the 2023 Presidential Pitch in Ghana and the FAO Agribusiness Catalyst Pitch. The company has also represented Ghana at major international forums, including the Africa Union Climate Summit, the Africa Food Systems Conference, and COP 28 in Dubai.

Looking ahead, Eco Protin is focused on growing both internally and externally. The company is set to increase its production capacity and expand beyond Ghana into West African markets. Additionally, Tufuor seeks partnerships with entomology and animal nutrition experts by leveraging connections from the MBC program to further optimize feed formulations tailored to specific livestock needs.

Eco Protin is not just a feed supplier; it is a sustainability-driven enterprise that tackles food security, environmental conservation, and economic empowerment.
