You no longer need to be an experienced programmer to build working software. With AI-powered development tools, University of Utah students from any major can describe an idea in plain language and turn it into a real app, website, or service in a matter of hours. The practice has a name, “vibe coding,” and it has become one of the fastest ways to prototype a startup idea, test a class project, or launch a side project.
The hard part is knowing where to start. This guide rounds up the AI coding tools that are free or discounted for students, from browser-based app builders that need almost no setup to full AI code editors for students comfortable with code. It also lists free options for storing your code and putting your app online, so you can share what you build with a live link.
One caveat: free tiers, credits, and student offers change often. Everything below is current as of the publishing of this article, so confirm the details on each tool’s site before you commit to it.
Already available to students
- OpenAI (university enterprise plan): University of Utah students have access through the university’s OpenAI enterprise plan, ChatGPT Edu. Request a license through the University IT Service Catalog. Separately, verified students can claim $100 in Codex credits.

Least setup; they build and host the app for you.
- Google AI Studio (Build mode): free, with one-click deploy to Cloud Run/Firebase.
- Replit: free Starter plan with daily Agent credits and one published app.
- Lovable: 5 credits/day, 30/month; public projects only.
- Bolt.new: about 300K tokens/day, 1M/month.
- v0 (Vercel): about $5/month in credits; strongest on frontend.
AI code editors and agents
For teams comfortable with code.
- Google Antigravity: free plan with a weekly agent quota.
- GitHub Copilot: free tier for anyone; Copilot Student is free for verified students.
- Cursor: free Hobby plan (the free student Pro year has ended).
