Photo Essay: The Make Space at Lassonde Studios

Whether you want to work on a class project or get back into your favorite hobby, the Make Space at Lassonde Studios has all the tools you need to be successful in your endeavors. There are always Make program mentors here to help. The Make Space is open for use to all University of Utah students.  Visit the Make program website to learn more, find open hours and get information about upcoming safety training: lassonde.utah.edu/make.

The Shop

The Shop is equipped with everything you could want to finish your wood or metal projects. This space is located in the very back of the Make Space, and you need safety training and a badge to use the space and the tools. The Make program hosts weekly safety training sessions for those who need to be safety certified.

Miter Saw

The miter saw is a great tool to use if you want to cut a piece of wood to the right specifications or if you want to cut at an angle.

Belt and Disk Sander

The sander is a perfect tool to use when you want to get a smooth finish on a piece of wood. It definitely beats hand sanding your whole project.

Drill Press

The drill press is a handy tool for getting precise holes drilled in your projects. The Make Space drill press is only made for wood, though, so no metal projects should be used on this tool.

Table Saw

This tool is great to use when you want a straight cut on your piece of wood or to cut a long plank into smaller pieces.

The Prototyping Room

The prototyping room has 3-D printers, laser cutters and other resources students can use if they want to make something for a personal project, their startup company or a class project. Tool mentors are always willing to help get your project just how you want it. Students aren’t required to be safety trained to use the tools and resources in this space.

3-D Printers

The Ultimaker +2 3-D printers are available on a first come first serve basis, so it is always a good idea to get there right when we open.

Laser Cutter

The laser cutter can engrave and cut objects out. You can use a variety of materials and the Make team has a materials list for reference in case you’re unsure about the piece you want to use.

Large-Format Printer

Inside the Make Space, you can print full-size posters. This is a great resource for some of our startup companies who want to advertise their product.

Vinyl Cutter

The vinyl cutter is perfect if you want to make logos for your startup or just a fun way to personalize your computer or water bottle.

Tool Room

The tool room is a perfect resource for everyone in the Make Space. Get access to hand tools, electronic equipment and sewing equipment in this room. Students aren’t required to be safety trained to use tools from this space.

Oscilloscope

The Make team has a variety of different oscilloscopes available for use. They also have variable power sources, as well as a variety of other electronic components for prototyping like breadboards, capacitors/resistors, LEDs, etc. Anyone can use these be it for a class project or creating a rudimentary version of Pong.

Soldering Iron

The Make Space has both soldering stations and individual irons available for use. The team also supplies flux and solder for your convenience.

Work Benches

The workbenches in the makespace are open to all students to use even when the rest of the space is closed.
