Magic Music Show: A Unique Entertainment Experience

Founder of the Magic Music Show and current MBA student at the University of Utah, John Robinson, aspires to entertain audiences everywhere with a unique combination of magic and music.

Robinson has had a drive for magic since he was 13 years old. Looking to wow an audience and do something that had never been done before, he came up with the Magic Music Performance, which combined magic and music at the same time. He was also interested in learning more about event management and the music industry, so this was the perfect opportunity.

“No matter what kind of trick I perform, I always try to tell a story,” he said. “An example of that is when I do the linking rings — I explain to the audience that the rings linking represent our dreams. If they seem impossible, we never even try. I ask, who here would like to win the lottery? Everybody raises their hands. Then I ask, who here participates in the lottery? And very few raise their hand. I tell the audience that if you do not believe you can win, you will never even try. So, my challenge to everyone watching is to believe in yourself and do things you think are impossible. While I say that, the rings link together and unlink.”

One of his first performances featured a female singer alongside magic performances. He hired a team of people to help market his event to make sure it would be a hit. Creating posters, YouTube videos, and advertisements to get people to show up taught him how to network and market. “Everyone that attended loved it,” Robinson said.

To help him grow his business, Robinson is participating in opportunities provided by the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, a top-10 ranked program for entrepreneurship at the University of Utah. He recently participated in the Get Seeded grant program. The experience helped him improve his business plan and pitch.

Robinson plans to continue pitching for grants through the Get Seeded program for funding to host more Magic Music performances on campus at the Post Theatre and then Kingsbury Hall.  He wants to build a broad audience across campus and then continue growing.
