Hundreds of students from universities all across Utah attended our 2015 Student Entrepreneur Conference (SEC) today to learn from community professionals about different facets of entrepreneurship.
The event, held at eBay’s Draper campus, offered them the opportunity to learn about intellectual property law, business formation, product design, digital marketing, and many other valuable business skills.
The conference featured networking sessions, learning workshops and keynote speaker Travis Cook, co-founder of Solution Stream – a custom software development firm located in Lehi. For many participants, Travis Cook’s keynote address was a highlight of the conference. He spoke on what motivates entrepreneurs.
The SEC teaches students how to be “student entrepreneurs,” which requires a unique skillset. Balancing school while launching an innovative business idea is not easy. Being successful at both requires a host of resources and excellent time management skills.
“It’s hard to learn how to be a successful student entrepreneur in the classroom. You have to speak to other successful ‘student entrepreneurs’ to learn about what works and what doesn’t,” said Ryan Snow, a student director at the Lassonde Institute. “The SEC aims at helping student entrepreneurs acquire the skills necessary to be successful at both. It’s a conference run entirely by student entrepreneurs, for student entrepreneurs.”
At the conference, students learned more about the entrepreneur programs hosted by the U’s Lassonde Institute. These programs help students get funding to launch their business ideas. For a list of programs, click here: lassonde.utah.edu/directory/.
If you missed the conference this year, the SEC is held every fall semester and is open to all university students across the state. And watch our online calendar for upcoming events.
