Bench to Bedside Competition Day at Utah State Capitol on April 8

The Bench to Bedside 2018-2019 competition concludes at the Utah State Capitol on Monday, April 8, 2019. The competition is open to all university students and the general public at 6-9 p.m., with the final awards ceremony beginning at 8 p.m.

Now in its ninth year, Bench to Bedside has helped launch 232 teams that have invented 229 medical devices, filed 158 patents and launched 64 companies. Student teams form into multidisciplinary startup companies and are given the task of identifying an unmet clinical need. Teams are given access during the year to over 100 industry professionals and clinicians from a broad area of specialties to serve as their consultants, key opinion leaders and stakeholders.

The competition is sponsored by Zions Bank and managed by the U’s Center for Medical Innovation and Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute.

The final event at the Capitol draws attendance from students, faculty physicians, residents, industry leaders, venture capital firms, university leadership and influential members of the Salt Lake community. Teams will be evaluated and scored for business strategy, design quality and healthcare impact by a VIP panel of judges.

A number of generous cash and in-kind prizes will be awarded to the top-ranked teams at Competition Night, including a travel package for one team to compete at the Medical Grand Challenge in Singapore in September 2019. In addition, everyone in attendance at the Capitol that night will be given the opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite innovation, and the team receiving the highest number of votes will receive the coveted Consumer Choice Award.

The competition is sponsored by Zions Bank and managed by the U’s Center for Medical Innovation and Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute.

University and high school students from across Utah, many of whom are our own University of Utah students, have worked very hard over the past two semesters to develop their product and business plan. We encourage all to come out and show support for these talented entrepreneurs and their medical innovations.
