Run a Kitchen: Compete to Serve Your Food in the Miller Cafe

DATE CHANGE: We moved the date for the “Run a Kitchen” event to Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 6:30-8 p.m. at Lassonde Studios. [Updated: 11-22-16, 3:20 p.m.]

Our new Food Entrepreneur program has grown beyond our expectations, and now we’re bringing you the biggest opportunity yet: a competition to serve your food at the Miller Cafe! All students from all backgrounds are welcome to participate. Got a recipe from mom that the world needs to see? Spent years crafting the perfect spaghetti sauce? Share it with us!

To compete, you must complete two steps:

  1. Attend our Nov. 22 “Run a Kitchen” event, hosted by Chartwell’s Dallas Balzly, to learn about running a professional kitchen.
  2. Get your $25 Utah Food Handler’s Permit, by taking an online test.

After submitting your recipe, then the Food Entrepreneur team, Chartwell’s and local chefs will pick the top recipes. From there, you’ll work with Chartwell’s own Chef Peter to make your recipe the best it can be and affordable for students on a meal plan. In the end, you’ll serve a dinner out of Chartwell’s own DubBox in the Miller Cafe at the Lassonde Studios! If you’re selected, you won’t just get bragging rights; you’ll win $100 and go down in the Food Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.

With this competition, we hope to give every student an opportunity to show off their cooking chops, learn more about the food industry and figure out what it takes to make the cut. If you have any questions about the process, or need help with the permitting process, email us at lassonde.food.e@gmail.com. Happy cooking!
